About Legacy Pox

All about Pox

What is Pox?

Pox is a resource denial-focused deck that is built around the namesake card "Smallpox" which is the symmetrical disruption that attacks multiple resources at once. This deck is looking to disrupt the opponent through, discard, creature removal, and mana denial. While the opponent is stumbling as they're low on resources the deck is looking to either close in on them with its win conditions and/or lock them out of the game with the prison aspect of the deck.

Why play Pox?

Pox is subjectively one of the most fun to play decks in Legacy, as it's a very unique deck that is for the most part built like a Mono-Black Control deck with plenty of functionally unique cards to control the game with that can be strengthened with color splashes. As the deck is usually built as a Mono-Black deck, it is a cheap entry point into Legacy, especially if you have 8-Rack in Modern already built this is a deck to consider playing if you want to explore the Legacy format at a relatively low cost due to the interchangeable upgrades being cheap for Legacy since there are so few reserve list cards and format staples that you need to own for Pox.

History of Pox

Pox as an archetype was born sometime around the release of the original Pox card from Ice Age. The oldest recorded tournament result I could find was Royce Chai's World's 1999 Extended format performance that can be found here. Pox as a deck later evolved with Smallpox which is a more mana efficient version of the card being one less mana and being very similar in function. When Liliana of the Veil was released in 2011 from Innistrad, the Pox deck took off with its first ever staple Planeswalker, which is still a widely played staple in Pox to this day. As the years went by, the original namesake card "Pox" got power creeped out of the Legacy format and became a relic of the past.

About CultOfPox.com

Cult of Pox is a discord server created by Bryan I., who is also an admin of the server. Travis from the Legacy Pit and NayNay are also admins of it. With permission to use the name, I (Tyler Jung, the Mono Black Mage / BlogBoy) have created CultOfPox.com to be an up-to-date resource for everything Pox-related, with the main focus being Legacy Pox. This project will be a group collaboration based on data for everything Pox.
